With the growth of San Diego FC, more people are joining the roster, and it has now been confirmed that a Spanish footballer has come on board as an investor.

Footballer Juan Mata has joined the growing list of stars taking an active role in the MLS, investing in the newly formed San Diego FC.

The new club, based in California, will be part of the Western Conference and will play at the Snapdragon Stadium.

As the league expands, with San Diego FC set to debut in the 2025 season as the 30th team, Mata’s involvement highlights the increasing influence of footballers in shaping the future of Major League Soccer.

Its ownership group is led by Egyptian businessman Mohamed Mansour, who now has Mata on board as a key investor.

The move marks a strategic partnership, with Mata aiming to follow in the footsteps of David Beckham, who became an iconic figure in the MLS after investing in Inter Miami.

Mata, who is currently playing for Western Sydney Wanderers in Australia, has expressed his excitement about his new role with San Diego FC.

“Joining San Diego FC as a partner is an exciting opportunity to help build something truly special in a city and league that are experiencing incredible growth,” said Mata for the team’s official website.

A new chapter for Mata and MLS

This marks a significant step in his post-playing career, as Mata intends to retire from professional football when his contract with the Wanderers ends in June 2025, fully dedicating himself to his role as a co-owner.

His arrival is a major boost for the club, with Mansour emphasizing their shared values of using football for social impact and long-term change.

San Diego FC’s future looks promising with the support of high-profile investors like Mata, as the MLS continues to grow and attract global attention.

People can look forward to exciting things from this new franchise as they work to make an impact in 2025 and beyond.
