With its debut just around the corner in February 2025, San Diego FC is actively building a competitive roster.
The latest buzz? A potential trade for defender Chris McVey from DC United.
San Diego FC tipped to sign DC United player
According to MLS insider Tom Bogert, San Diego FC has reportedly acquired McVey in exchange for $50,000 in General Allocation Money plus $50,000 in add-ons.
McVey, 27, appeared in 28 matches this season, but DC United recently declined his contract option.
The California-based club will compete in the Western Conference and play home games at Snapdragon Stadium.
This latest rumor comes as San Diego FC continues to grab headlines with its ambitious roster-building efforts.
Chris McVey began his MLS career with Inter Miami in 2022, strengthening their defensive line.
In 2024, DC United acquired McVey from Inter Miami in a deal that included a 2024 international roster spot and up to $100,000 in GAM.
Known for his versatility, McVey can play multiple defensive positions, making him a valuable asset to his teams.
Ally Mackay, DC United’s general manager, praised McVey at the time of his signing, saying, “Chris is an experienced defender who can play in a variety of positions across the backline.”
A bright future for San Diego FC
If McVey does join San Diego FC, his experience could bring stability to the club’s defense.
Paired with high-profile additions like Alex Mighten and the rumored signing of Erick Gutierrez from Chivas, the team is shaping to be a serious contender in its debut season.
