San Diego FC continues preparing for its inaugural 2025 MLS season, and as the new year approaches, reports of potential signings continue to surface.
Just hours ago, the California club made headlines after officially announcing a new signing from Nashville SC.
San Diego FC announced the signing of veteran midfielder Anibal Godoy, 34, with the aim of adding experience to the squad.
Additionally, other reports continue to link the MLS’s newest franchise with football superstars from both Europe and America.
In addition to San Diego FC’s interest in Kevin De Bruyne, recent rumors also connect them with Club America’s star, Diego Valdes.
Now, the club’s sporting director, Tyler Heaps, has made a statement that is sure to excite Chrome and Azul fans.
San Diego FC aims for star signings, but won’t overpay
Tyler Heaps recently spoke with Golazo America and confirmed that, although they don’t plan to break the bank, San Diego FC is a club aiming to become a major destination for top players.
“We’ve had a number of players reach out to us that probably I never imagined being this age talking to these players on the phone trying to figure out if they actually want to come and play here in San Diego,” said Heaps.
Charlie Davis directly asked the executive about De Bruyne and a hypothetical phone call with the talented footballer.
The question was about how to determine if a player will commit and give their all for the team, rather than just coming to San Diego for a vacation.
Heaps responded: “It’s the hardest question to ask. And we dealt with this in Monaco firsthand, right? Because we’re also in a place that is really nice to be, and it’s really easy to get complacent”.
“It’s why it’s so impressive what Riqui’s (Puig) been able to do at the LA Galaxy, because they hit it out of the park with him. Because that guy, when you watch him play, he gives everything for the badge”.
“And I think that’s what’s really important for us to make sure that we get these DPs right. And I think Hirving (Lozano) is a good example. Like, Hirving’s calling me every day saying, I can’t wait to get started, I can’t wait to get started. And you saw whenever we announced him, like, there were 10,000 people there chanting his name. I think it means more to him”.
How’s San Diego FC’s roster so far?
The club, eager to make a strong start, has been focused on building a roster with a mix of international experience, MLS know-how, and versatility.
In recent months, the team has been investing in its squad, bringing in star players like Christopher McVey and goalkeeper CJ dos Santos from Inter Miami, among others.
