The Major League Soccer has announced that Don Garber, its longtime commissioner, will continue in his role through 2027.

Since then, Garber has played a pivotal role in transforming the MLS into a thriving entity, with the league now boasting 30 teams, including the upcoming addition of San Diego FC in 2025.

As quoted by The New York Times, the extension was confirmed by the MLS Board of Governors just before the MLS Cup final between LA Galaxy and the New York Red Bulls.

While the financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, Garber’s ongoing leadership is seen as crucial for the league’s continued success.

Garber took over as commissioner in 1999, at a time when the MLS was struggling. The league was losing money and on the verge of folding.

Under Garber’s leadership, the MLS has seen remarkable growth. He established Soccer United Marketing (SUM), the league’s marketing arm, which has been essential in raising the profile of the sport in North America.

He also encouraged the construction of soccer-specific stadiums, improving the fan experience and creating a stronger connection between teams and their communities.

Garber’s impact on the MLS

Perhaps one of Garber’s most significant contributions has been his focus on developing young talent through academies.

This initiative has played a key role in creating a sustainable pipeline of soccer players in the U.S. and Canada.

Garber reflects proudly on his 25 years with the league, highlighting the MLS’s transformation into a respected force in world football.

“We’ve built a powerful football nation in the U.S. and Canada,” Garber said, emphasizing the league’s growth at all levels.

With his contract extended, Garber will continue guiding the MLS as it expands its influence and status globally.
